Gut Health

Gut health refers to more than just the management of our bowel function: it is a vital foundation of our overall well-being. In addition to regulating functions of the digestive tract, the microbiome that resides in the gut can significantly influence what happens to the rest of our body. It is no wonder that the gut is referred to as the second brain of the human body.

1. Digestion and nutrient absorption

The gut microbiome helps to break down food, absorb vitamins and minerals and produce certain vitamins.

2. Immune system

The gastrointestinal tract is the largest immune organ in our body.  It helps support the body’s natural defense against infections and inflammation.  The communication between the bacteria and our immune cells determine such things as the ability to fight infections, regulate inflammation as well as autoimmune reactions.

3. Production of hormones and neurotransmitters

Not only is the gut the largest IMMUNE organ, it is also the largest ENDOCRINE organ of the body.  Approximately 90 to 95% of all hormones are produced with the help of gut bacteria.  Hormones are the chemical messengers that coordinate different functions in the body, and influence such things as mood, appetite and sleep as well as metabolism, immunity and inflammation.

4. Maintenance of the gut barrier/regulation of inflammation

There is a very complex communication between the microbiome and our immune cells that infiltrate into the surface of the GI tract.  This communication helps to protect the lining of the gut and avoid a condition called leaky gut syndrome. Preventing the entry of harmful substances into the bloodstream is essential in regulating inflammation.

Factors that can contribute to disrupting gut health include such things as poor diet, antibiotics and medications, stress, lack of sleep and infections to name a few.  To help promote gut health, it is important to eat a balanced diet rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables as well as incorporating  pro and prebiotics which consists of fermented food items.  It helps to remain hydrated, to manage her stress and to make certain that we have plenty of sleep.
